This session will spark ideas for conducting health outreach and creating library health programs. Do you ever wonder about the health needs of your community and how library programming could help? Activate your curiosity by learning how to locate county-level information on your community’s health and learn how resources from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and other reputable agencies introduce community members to trusted health information in a fun and engaging way. We’ll share real-life examples of programming to get you thinking about how you can collaborate to create engaging health programming that educates and elevates health. From this interactive session, you’ll leave with ideas to develop your own health outreach programs and partnerships within your community. Approved as elective for Consumer Health Information Specialization (CHIS) Level 1.
The National Institutes of Health Data Management and Sharing Policy (NIH DMSP) that went into effect in January 2023 requires funded researchers to submit a plan outlining how scientific data from their research will be managed and shared. This session will highlight existing tools and resources to support researchers with their data management needs. Explore the DMPTool, a free tool that walks users through creating comprehensive data management plans that comply with the new NIH requirements. This session will explore the basics of data management planning, NIH and National Library of Medicine data management resources, and give an overview of the scope of the NIH DMSP. Approved as elective for Data Services Specialization (DSS) Level 1.

Successfully providing consumer health information to specific populations relies on knowing how to build a connection between your information resources and your audience. This course will take you through this process from beginning to end using free authoritative health information materials and activities. This class will help you uncover ways to use health information materials with theoretical communities as well as your own populations. Although our focus will be primarily on rural and underserved communities, as that is our experience and expertise, the main principals of this course can be applied to building information outreach initiatives with other types of communities as well.

While there are multiple impact factors to analyze the value of researchers’ work, most of those impact factors can only be obtained behind paywalls. iCite is a free web application from the National Institutes of Health that uses a powerful algorithm to display bibliographic data for one researcher or an institution. In this class, attendees will learn how to harvest the power of iCite to show the influence, publication area (human, animal, or molecular/cellular biology), and citations associated with a single author or their institution.
Note: Attendees are requested to bring a laptop or tablet.

The All of Us Research Program is a National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded initiative to capture and share comprehensive longitudinal health data with an emphasis on including the diversity of the U.S. population to accelerate inclusive health discoveries, reduce health disparities and promote health equity. Born out of the Precision Medicine Initiative and with the stated goal of including data from one million or more participants reflecting the diversity of the United States, the program aims to facilitate the exploration of a wide range of diseases, both common and rare, and support the democratizing research by including those typically underrepresented in biomedical research and making the data broadly accessible for research purposes.
In support of these goals, the Interdisciplinary Guided Network for Investigation, Translation and Equity (IGNITE) was funded by NIH to increase engagement with the use of the All of Us Research Program data and working to connect researchers of color, from both academic institutions and community organizations, to the All of Us Researcher Workbench for conducting research projects that are improving the quality of life and well-being of community members.
This course will utilize the IGNITE Data Sandbox model for participants to interactively engage with and explore the available data from the publicly available data browser for the All of Us Research Program: https://databrowser.researchallofus.org/.
Note: Attendees are requested to bring a laptop or tablet.

This class aims to provide culturally appropriate health information and resources for LGBTQIA+ populations and the librarians and health care practitioners who support them. We have done our best to use culturally sensitive language and examples recognizing that language on this topic, like gender and sexuality, can be fluid. Providing access to health information for and about these populations is extremely important. The topic of gender and LGBTQIA+ issues may be sensitive for some. Social stigma, fear, or rejection is real for many people. It is essential to bring awareness to these issues and create practices around addressing them. This class connects with NNLM initiatives addressing Environmental Determinants of Health and Confronting Health Misinformation. Note: Attendees are requested to bring pen and paper. Laptops and tablets are optional. Approved as elective for Consumer Health Information Specialization (CHIS) Level 1.
